...With this new Catholic concept, it is possible to better understand both the negative and positive, the negative and positive aspects of the Council of Trent. The term "Catholic Reformation" was first used by the 19th century Protestant historian Wilhelm Maurenbrecher (1838-92) to refer to the church reform movement that predates Luther. He called both the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Reformation, which was separate from it, Reformation, but today the latter is often called Reform to distinguish it from the former.
