German composer. He made his debut as an opera singer in Hamburg in 1718, and released his first opera three years later. He then studied under A. Scarlatti in Italy, and achieved success as an opera composer in Naples. He was appointed Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony, who was also the King of Poland, and arrived in Dresden in 1731, a position he held until 1763. He was then active in Vienna, Venice, and other cities. In addition to numerous operas, he composed organ pieces, oratorios, concertos, and instrumental pieces.
