A survey ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy (displacement 3,510 tons). It was originally a Russian warship built at a shipyard in Genoa, Italy. It was used for oceanographic observations and hydrographic surveys from 1924. Captain Shigematsu Ryoichi, who served as the ship's captain from 1925 to 1926, was a pioneer in oceanographic observations at the Navy Hydrographic Department. It was a pioneer in wide-area observations of the Western Pacific Ocean up to the equator. The Manchuria, at 11°13′N, 142°09.5′E, southwest of Guam, gave a depth of 9,818m, which it named the Manchuria Deep. The ship was also one of the first to adopt acoustic soundings, and established an observation method in which soundings were the main part of oceanographic surveys along with water temperature sampling and bottom sediment surveys, laying the foundation for systematic observations by survey ships and survey vessels.
