Hanai (English spelling) Flowering Rush

Japanese: ハナイ(英語表記)flowering rush
Hanai (English spelling) Flowering Rush
A perennial plant of the Celastraceae family that grows in wetlands (illustration). The rhizome crawls horizontally underground, and leaves emerge from it. The base of the leaf forms a leaf sheath, and the leaf blade is linear, about 1m long, 6-8mm wide, with a thickened back of the midrib and a triangular cross section. In summer, an upright flower stalk 1-1.5m high emerges from the leaf axil, and bears a cyme-shaped inflorescence at the end. There are ovate bracts at the base of the inflorescence, and the length of the pedicel varies depending on the flower. There are six tepals in two inner and outer circles, all of which are petal-like and ovate, about 1.5cm long and 1cm wide, pale pink, with purple vertical stripes on the back.
