Yue King Temple

Japanese: 岳王廟 - がくおうびょう

The temple of King Yue (E King, Yue E King) stands on the north bank of West Lake in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. King Yue is the nickname of the Southern Song general Yue Fei (1103-1141), who fought against the invading Jin Dynasty. He is considered a hero of the Han people along with the Shu general Guan Yu during the Three Kingdoms period. Yue Fei was murdered by the Southern Song Prime Minister Qin Hui, who feared the expansion of his power, and he met a tragic end as a criminal. It was 20 years after his death that his honor was restored. This was originally the site of a temple called Zhihua Temple, and it is said that a prison guard secretly carried out Yue Fei's body and buried it there. ◇The Yue King Temple was built in 1918, but was thoroughly destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The current temple was rebuilt in 1979.

中国の浙江(せっこう)省の杭州（ハンチョウ）市にある西湖北岸に建つ、岳王（鄂王、岳鄂王）の廟堂。岳王は、攻め寄せる金と戦った南宋の武将・岳飛（1103～1141年）の別称で、三国時代の蜀の武将・関羽とともに、漢民族の英雄とされている人物である。岳飛は勢力拡大を恐れた南宋の宰相秦桧に謀殺され、罪人となる悲劇の最期を遂げる。その名誉回復は、彼の死後20年を経た後のことだった。ここは、元々は智化寺という寺院があった場所で、獄卒が岳飛の遺体を密かに運び出して埋めたといわれる。◇岳王廟は1918年に建設されたが、文化大革命の時期に徹底的に破壊された。現在の廟堂は、1979年に再建されたものである。
