Modern sports include ball games such as soccer and baseball, track and field events of running, jumping, and throwing, combat sports such as kendo and judo, ice and snow sports such as skiing and skating, water sports such as swimming and diving, animal sports such as horse racing and dog racing, boat sports such as yachting and rowing, car sports such as bicycles and cars, and competitive dancing, mainly ballroom dancing.

…Hippocrates considered walking, running, horse riding, wrestling, and gymnastics to be extremely important in maintaining health and treating illnesses. This idea has been passed down to Western medicine, and the 16th century book De Arte Gymnastica by G. Mercuriale describes the principles of medical gymnastics as follows: (1) exercise should maintain health, (2) exercise should not disturb the balance of blood and body fluids, (3) exercise should be appropriate for each part of the body, (4) healthy people should exercise regularly, (5) sick people should avoid exercise that may worsen their condition, (6) people in the convalescent stage should be prescribed exercises according to their individual conditions, and (7) people who live a sedentary lifestyle need exercise first and foremost. This idea is still valid to a large extent today. …
