Grantessa shimeji (English name)
Phylum Porifera, Class Calcareous Sponges, Family Heteropidae. Forms grayish-white, hemispherical colonies measuring 8.5 cm in diameter and 4.5 cm in height. The colonies consist of numerous urns or tubes arranged in a radiating pattern, and the ends of each urn or tube are usually open. The groove system is cycloidal, and the skeleton is made up of rod-shaped, triradial, and tetraradial bone fragments. Found on shallow reefs along the Pacific coast of Honshu, including the Izu and Kii peninsulas.

海綿動物門石灰海綿綱ヘテロピア科。直径 8.5cm,高さ 4.5cm内外の灰白色,半球形の群体をつくる。群体は数多くの壺または管が放散状に配列されたものから成り,各壺,管の先端は通常開口している。溝系はサイコン型で,骨格は桿状体,三輻体,四輻体などの骨片でできている。伊豆半島,紀伊半島など本州太平洋岸の浅海の岩礁に分布する。
