Mosquito swarm - Kabashira

This refers to the phenomenon in which mosquitoes, midges, midges, crane flies and other insects of the Dipteran group gather in a column-like formation while flying up, down and left and right. Mosquito columns move up and down as a whole, but are formed above ground protrusions or patterns of a different color from the surroundings, and can be seen at the tops of treetops or under the tips of branches. They are usually made up of only males, and females have been observed to fly in and mate with the males, so this is said to be a reproductive behavior, but there are also cases where only females fly in or where there is more than one type of insect. Mosquito columns often form at dusk or dawn, but they can also form during the day depending on the type and weather. The same phenomenon as mosquito columns can be seen in non-Dipteran insects, such as mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies and long-necked stink bugs.

昆虫類のカ、ユスリカ、ヌカカ、ガガンボなど双翅(そうし)目長角群の昆虫が、上下左右に飛びながら柱状に群集する現象をいう。蚊柱は全体として上下に移動するが、地上にある突起物や周囲と色の違う紋様を中心にその上方でつくられ、木の梢(こずえ)の上、枝先の下でみられることもある。構成は普通、雄だけで、雌がこれに飛び入り雄と交尾することが観察されているので、生殖のための行動といわれているが、雌だけの群飛や1種類だけでない場合もある。蚊柱ができるのは夕暮れ、夜明けが多いが、種類と天候により日中にもできる。双翅類以外でも蚊柱と同じ現象が、カゲロウ、トビケラ、カワゲラ、クビナガカメムシなどでみられる。
