Greek islands scattered in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Also known as the Southern Sporades. Although the name means 12 islands, it actually consists of 14 major islands, including Rhodes, Karpathos, and Kos, and about 40 smaller islands. Generally mountainous, producing grapes, olives, and sponges. Colonized by ancient Phoenicia and Greece, it was conquered by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. In 1522 it became part of Turkey, and after the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912 it became part of Italy. Since 1947 it has been part of Greece. Area: ^{2,714 km2} . Population: 190,071 (2001).

エーゲ海南東部に散在するギリシア領の諸島。南スポラデス諸島とも。名は12島の意だが，実際はロードス島，カルパトス島，コス島など主要14島と約40の小島からなる。全般に山がちで，ブドウ，オリーブ，海綿などを産する。古代フェニキア，ギリシアの植民を経て，前４世紀アレクサンドロス大王に征服された。1522年トルコ領，1911年―1912年のイタリア・トルコ戦争後イタリア領。1947年からギリシア領。2714km²。19万71人（2001）。
