...Long ago, when ascetics were unable to find water on mountain paths, they would cut this vine to quench their thirst, hence the name Gyojanomiz. Amazuru V. saccharifera Makino (also called Otokobudo) grows in mountainous areas and, like the Sankakuzuru, has thick, shiny, hairless leaves that turn a beautiful red in autumn. The leaves taste sweet when chewed, and sweet juice comes out when the vine is cut, hence the name Amazuru.
