A general term for tin produced in the Malay Peninsula. After World War II, the term fell into little use. The Malay Peninsula had long been famous as a producer of tin, but its importance increased in the 19th century with the start of the manufacture of tin-plated iron sheets (tinplate) in Britain and the canning industry that used them. Tin production was initially carried out by Chinese capitalists using Chinese workers. The technology was simple and typical of a labor-intensive industry. Tin was mainly produced on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, and the Straits Settlements were important as an export port. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
