Nickname

It is the local name of the northwesterly winter monsoon that blows in western Japan. There are two theories about its origin: one is that it blows from the northwest (inui) direction, and the other is that "ana" is a corrupted version of "inu" (dog), and the other is that "ana" is an interjection expressing surprise. "Shi" is an archaic word for wind, just like the "shi" in "west" and "east." It is also called "ana naze." In the Seto Inland Sea, it is called "anaji no yoka fuki," and it is said this way because this monsoon can blow for eight days once it starts to blow, and fishermen and others were cautious because the seas would become rough.

西日本で吹く北西の冬の季節風の局地名。語源は北西（戌亥(いぬい)）の方向から吹くので、「いぬ」が転訛(てんか)して「あな」になったという説と、驚きを表す感動詞として「あな」を考える説とがある。「し」は「にし」「ひがし」の「し」と同様、風の古語である。「あなぜ」ともいう。瀬戸内では「あなじの八日吹き」というが、この季節風は吹き始めると八日も吹き続くことがあるので、このようにいわれ、漁師などは海が荒れるので警戒した。
