…He was a stubborn priest who refused to bow to the authority of lords and royal officials, and was highly respected by his parishioners. However, after his death, a large number of secretly written notes were discovered, and he became known as a radical social thinker ahead of his time. In these notes, “Mémoire des pensées et sentiments de Jean Meslier,” which are estimated to have been written between 1719 and 1729, Father Meslier pointed out the contradictions in Christian doctrine, expressed his atheistic stance that denied the existence of God as a creator, and at the same time presented a radical idea that denounced social inequality and called for the overthrow of oppression by the people. His notes were circulated in manuscript form, but in 1761, excerpts were printed and published by Voltaire, making them widely known. …
