A general term for films that deal with various supernatural phenomena. According to Michel Laclos' classification, it includes films that deal with ghosts, zombies (walking corpses), vampires, werewolves, sirene (mermaids), God and the Devil, heaven and hell, the invisible man, mediums, resurrection, souls that inhabit other bodies after death, split personalities, clairvoyance, hallucinations, sleepwalking, and golems (clay figures brought to life). [The origins of horror movies] The oldest theme of horror films was born from two literary works, "Frankenstein" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," both of which were made into films in 1908. However, in terms of film history, the conventional wisdom is that the origins of horror films can be traced back to "German Expressionist films" (Expressionism), which began shortly after World War I.
