Kitamurasaki sea urchin - Kitamurasaki sea urchin

Japanese:
Kitamurasaki sea urchin - Kitamurasaki sea urchin

A marine animal belonging to the Echinodermata phylum, Echinoidea class, and Echinidae family. This purple sea urchin is the most common sea urchin found along the coasts of Hokkaido and northern Honshu. Its shell is 6-7 cm in diameter, and its spines are about 2-3 cm long. It is very similar to the purple sea urchin of the Echinoidea family found further south, but can be distinguished by its dark green spines and rows of microscopic notches on the surface, its green or purple bare shell, and its lack of habit of going into holes in rocks. It crawls on rocks and boulders, feeding on seaweed, fragments of living organisms, and decaying matter. It spawns from September to late October. It is an important edible species, with several hundred tons of gonads landed annually. It is also found along the coasts of the Korean Peninsula and northern China.
