…the latter are numerous small muscles attached to the skin around the face, eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, which open and close the eyes and mouth, chew the nose, and in animals, move the ears. In higher animals, especially humans, the facial muscles also move to produce facial expressions in response to changes in emotions, so these muscles are also called mimic muscles. The blood vessels in the face are roughly divided into the facial artery on the surface and the maxillary artery on the deep layer, both of which are branches of the external carotid artery.
