Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown An ancient religious figure with magical powers. According to the Nihon Shoki, in the seventh month of autumn in the third year of the reign of Empress Kogyoku (644), he preached that worshiping the deity of Tokoyo would bestow wealth and longevity, make the poor wealthy, and rejuvenate the elderly, starting the first religious movement of ancient times, said to have originated from Taoist magic, near the Fuji River in Suruga Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). Tokoyo no Kami is a green insect with black spots that resembles a silkworm and is born on tangerine and Japanese pepper trees. The people threw their belongings and livestock onto the streets, drank alcohol, sang and danced wildly, abandoned work, became vagrants, and even stormed the capital, but the movement to worship Tokoyo no Kami came to an end when Oibeta was captured and beaten by Hata no Kawakatsu, a powerful lord and Buddhist believer.
