A river in northern Europe, Russia. It originates in the northwestern foot of the Ural Mountains, flows north, and empties into the Barents Sea in the Arctic Ocean. It is 1,809 km long. It freezes over from November to May. The river basin is rich in coal (Pechora coalfield) and oil (Ukhta). Coal, grain, timber, etc. are transported along the river.
