A former town in Soo County in eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. The Shirasu Plateau that occupies most of the town area was developed by Noikura Jinbei and others between the Taisho and early Showa periods, and is called Noikurabaru. Livestock farming is thriving here, and the town also produces rice, melons, strawberries, and tea. The Nichinan Line and National Route 220 pass through the town. In January 2006, it merged with Matsuyama Town and Shibushi Town in Soo County to become a city, Shibushi City. Area: 98.05 km2 . Population: 12,331 (2003).

In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, Goshoura Town, Kuratake Town, Sumimoto Town, Shinwa Town, Itsuwa Town, Amakusa Town, and Kawaura Town in Amakusa County to become a city. It has an area of ​​59.63 km2 and a population of 6,561 (2003).
