A former town in Soo County in eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. The Shirasu Plateau that occupies most of the town area was developed by Noikura Jinbei and others between the Taisho and early Showa periods, and is called Noikurabaru. Livestock farming is thriving here, and the town also produces rice, melons, strawberries, and tea. The Nichinan Line and National Route 220 pass through the town. In January 2006, it merged with Matsuyama Town and Shibushi Town in Soo County to become a city, Shibushi City. Area: 98.05 km2 . 鹿児島県東部,曾於(そお)郡の旧町。町域の大部分を占めるシラス台地は大正〜昭和初期野井倉甚兵衛らが開田,野井倉原(のいくらばる)と呼ばれる。畜産が盛んなほか,米,メロン,イチゴを産し,茶も栽培。日南線,国道220号線が通る。2006年1月,曽於郡松山町,志布志町と合併し市制,志布志市となる。98.05km2。1万2331人(2003)。
