...a group of Russian composers active from the end of the 1850s to the 1870s against the backdrop of the rise of democratic thought. In Russian, they are called the "New Russian School," the "Balakirev Group," or the "Moguchaya Kuchka" (a name first used by Stasov), and in French, the "Groupe des Cinq." In literature, they are in a similar position to the group that gathered around Chernyshevsky and Dobrolyubov in the magazine "The Modern Man," and in painting, the "Artel' khydozhnikov" and "The Itinerant Exhibitionists."
