Ikina [village] - Ikina

Japanese: 生名[村] - いきな

A village in Ochi County, northern Ehime Prefecture. Population 2,304 (1995). It consists of Ikina Island, which belongs to the Geiyo Islands, and nine other uninhabited islands, large and small. The inlet on the coast has been reclaimed and turned into settlements and farmland. Across the sea, many people commute to Innoshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and there are many people who go to the shipyards in the city. Both the commercial and cultural spheres belong to the Hiroshima area, and it was once resolved to incorporate it into Innoshima City. There are no noteworthy industries, but citrus fruits are grown on the slopes and seaweed is cultivated. During the feudal era, it was a penal colony for the Matsuyama Domain, and the farmers of 26 villages of Kumayama suffered from the tax burden due to the paper monopoly and the fall in tea prices, and the chief retainer Okudaira Kyubei, who was responsible for the Kumayama Uprising and fled to the Ozu Domain, was exiled there.

愛媛県北部，越智（おち）郡の村。人口2304(1995)。芸予諸島に属する生名島と大小9個の無人島からなる。海岸は入江がほとんど埋め立てられて集落，耕地となっている。海を隔てて広島県因島市に対し，同市の造船所などへの通勤者が多い。商圏，文化圏とも広島圏に属し，因島市への編入が議決されたこともある。特筆すべき産業はなく，傾斜地でのかんきつ類の栽培とノリ養殖が行われる。藩政時代には松山藩の流刑地で，久万山26ヵ村の農民が紙の専売制と茶の値下がりで年貢に苦しみ，大洲藩に逃散した久万山騒動の責任者で家老の奥平久兵衛が流罪になっている。
