Born January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California, he is an American actor. Born to a U.S. Navy officer, he graduated from Principia College in Illinois in 1953. After serving two years in the military during the Korean War, he studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and appeared on off-Broadway and Broadway stages. In his first film, To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), he played a mysterious, reclusive man, making a memorable debut despite being a minor role. He then appeared in a series of small films and television dramas, gradually moving on to play important supporting roles in major films. In The Godfather (1972) and its sequel, The Godfather, Part II (1974), he played a shrewd lawyer for the Mafia. The first film earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was again nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Apocalypse Now (1979), was nominated for Best Actor for The Great Santini (1980), and finally won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as a fallen former country music star in Tender Mercies (1983).
