[Early Crusades]
The First Crusade began with the launch of expeditions in various parts of the region (1) mentioned above. With Adhemar du Puy, Bishop of Le Puy, as the papal representative and mediator, the four legions established their advance base and supply base (Constantinople) in region (2). After accepting the fulfillment of their oath of allegiance to the Byzantine emperor, they engaged in skirmishes with the Seljuk forces of Rum, who controlled the region, in various parts of Anatolia. Then, they began full-scale operations with a siege of Antioch, the gateway to region (3). At the same time, a separate force took Edessa, expanding the European occupation of the region as far as the Euphrates River basin.
