Reverse marriage - Gyakuenkon

A form of marriage. Ethnic groups around the world have their own regulations that give priority to or prohibit marriages between men and women of certain relationships. One such marriage regulation is reverse marriage. Reverse marriage can be roughly defined as a form of marriage in which, when one spouse dies, the other spouse remarries the brother or sister of the deceased spouse. However, sometimes a person chooses not the actual brother or sister of the deceased spouse, but a brother or sister classified within the spouse's kinship group, and in this case, too, it is reverse marriage in the broad sense.

Levirate marriage is classified into two types: levirate marriage, in which a widow marries the brother of her deceased husband, and sororate marriage, in which a widower marries the sister of the deceased wife.

婚姻の一形態。世界各地の諸民族は、特定の間柄にある男女間の婚姻を優先したり、あるいは禁止したりする規制をおのおのもっている。このような婚姻規制の一つが逆縁婚である。逆縁婚とは、配偶者の一方が死亡した場合に、死亡した配偶者の兄弟あるいは姉妹と再婚するという婚姻形態であるといちおう定義できる。しかし、再婚の相手として、死亡した配偶者の実際の兄弟姉妹ではなく、その配偶者の親族集団内の類別上の兄弟姉妹が選ばれることもあり、この場合も広い意味での逆縁婚である。

　逆縁婚は、寡婦が亡夫の兄弟と結婚する兄弟逆縁婚（レビレート婚levirate）と、寡夫が亡婦の姉妹と結婚する姉妹逆縁婚（ソロレート婚sororate）の二つの形態に分類される。
