Karavelov, Lyuben
Born: 1834. Koprivshtitsa
[Died] January 21, 1879. Ruse. Bulgarian writer and social activist. After graduating from a Greek middle school in Plovdiv, he became interested in studying the customs of the common people, and stayed in Moscow from 1857 to 1866, becoming an auditor at Moscow University. Influenced by Russian revolutionary democrats, especially the Slavophiles, he published novels in Russian. In 1867 he moved to Serbia, where he associated with radical democrats, was imprisoned in 1868, and released in 1869. In Bucharest, he collaborated with Bulgarian revolutionaries such as Botev, and published the magazines Liberty (1869-72) and Independence (1873-74). In 1869 he joined the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Revolution, drafted its platform, and became its chairman in 1872. After 1873 he distanced himself from the revolutionary movement. He is the founder of Bulgarian realist literature.

Karavelov, Petko Stoychev

Born: 1843/1845 in Koprivščica
[Died] January 24, 1903. Sofia Bulgarian politician. Brother of L. Karabelov. Studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University, and had connections with the Narodniks. In 1878, he was a delegate to the Constituent Assembly, and led the left wing of the Liberal Party. In 1879, he was Chairman of the National Assembly, and in 1880, Minister of Finance, and served as Prime Minister from 1880 to 1881. After the 1881 coup, he went into exile. He published the magazine "Independence" in Eastern Rumelia. He opposed the dictatorial rule of Alexander I, and demanded the restoration of the "Tarnovo Constitution." In 1883, he returned to Sofia, and served as Prime Minister again from 1884 to 1886. He became Regent in 1886, and Prime Minister for a third time in 1901, defending democratic freedoms.

ブルガリアの政治家。 L.カラベロフの弟。モスクワ大学歴史文献学部に留学,ナロードニキと交流。 1878年憲法制定会議代議員,自由党左派を指導。 1879年国民議会議長,1880年大蔵大臣を経て,1880~81年首相。 1881年クーデター後,亡命。東ルメリアで『独立』誌刊行。アレクサンダル1世の独裁政治に反対し,『タルノボ憲法』の復活を要求。 1883年ソフィアに帰還,1884~86年再度首相に就任。 1886年摂政,1901年三たび首相,民主主義的自由を擁護した。
