This refers to the death of an infant as a result of punishment or abuse by guardians (parents or other people who care for infants and young children). In recent years, not only in Europe and the United States but also in Japan, there has been an increase in cases of injury and death due to punishment or irresponsible neglect, which has become a medical and social problem. The average age of victims (battered children) who die from punishment is under four years old, with the largest number being infants and young children under two years old. The most common perpetrators are biological mothers (especially those in their 20s), followed by biological fathers, stepmothers, and stepfathers.
