New Criticism

Japanese: ニュー･クリティシズム（英語表記）New Criticism

A school of criticism that flourished in the United States and Britain in the 1930s to 1950s. It is also translated as "New Criticism." Based on the new literary consciousness of TS Eliot and IA Richards in the 1920s, it aimed to provide precise and objective evaluation of literary works (especially poetry). The American "Southern Critics" led by JC Ransome and A. Tate are considered to be its parent group, but in Britain, W. Empson, who studied under Richards at Cambridge University, is also sometimes included. It had a particular fondness for the intellectual and difficult new poetry of the 20th century, as well as the 17th century British "metaphysical poetry" which shows a strong similarity to it.

20世紀の30～50年代に米英でさかんであった批評の一流派。〈新批評〉とも訳す。20年代のT.S.エリオットやI.A.リチャーズらによる新しい文学意識にもとづき，文学作品(とくに詩)の精密･客観的な評価をめざした。J.C.ランサム，A.テートらの率いるアメリカの〈南部批評家〉がその母体とみなされるが，イギリス側ではケンブリッジ大学でリチャーズの教えを受けたW.エンプソンをその数に入れることもある。20世紀の知的で難解な新しい詩，およびそれとの強い類似性を示す17世紀イギリスの〈形而上詩〉を偏愛した。
