Hisaichirō Hara

A Russian literature scholar born in Niigata Prefecture. His pen name was Byakko. He graduated from the English department of Waseda University in 1914 (Taisho 3) and the Russian department of Tokyo School of Foreign Languages ​​(now Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) in 1917. He became a lecturer in Russian literature at Waseda University in 1921, but resigned shortly thereafter to dedicate himself to translating and introducing Russian literature. He was particularly fascinated by Tolstoy, and in 1933 (Showa 8) he established the headquarters of the "Tolstoy Promotion Society" and worked to popularize his ideas. His translations include the 22 volumes of "The Complete Works of Tolstoy the Great" and three volumes of "Tolstoy the Great" by Biryukov, and his own book "Tolstoy and I".

ロシア文学者。新潟県生まれ。号は白光。1914年（大正3）早稲田(わせだ)大学英文科、17年東京外国語学校（現東京外国語大学）露語科卒業。21年から早稲田大学露文科講師となったが、ほどなく辞職し、ロシア文学の翻訳、紹介に専念した。とくにトルストイに心酔し、33年（昭和8）「トルストイ普及会」本部を設け、その思想の普及に努めた。訳業に『大トルストイ全集』22巻、ビリューコフ著『大トルストイ』三巻など、自書に『トルストイと私』がある。
