In 1952, the Uganda National Congress (UNC), a nationalist party, was founded under the leadership of IK Musazi and aimed for independence. The following year, when Buganda King EFMutesa II was exiled to London for opposing the British move to form the East African Union, the UNC joined the movement to promote the king's return, but it became embroiled in the political movement of the Buganda Kingdom and gradually began to split. Mutesa II was allowed to return in 1955 as a concession from the British government, and the power of the royalists grew stronger, so members of the UNC from the north and west who were dissatisfied with Buganda politics left the party and founded the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) in 1959. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Mutesa, EF" is listed below.
