National Diet Library Classification

National Diet Library Classification

...The Library of Congress, which had a collection of over one million books by the end of the 19th century, could no longer satisfy the Baconian classification system, and instead took inspiration from Comte's system of learning and used a combination of the alphabet (excluding I, O, W, X, and Y) and ordinal numbers in its enumeration system. Incidentally, Japan's National Diet Library Classification (abbreviated NDL), published between 1963 and 1968, uses a non-decimal system of notation, using one or two letters of the alphabet from A to Z and numbers from 1 to 999. Unlike the method of assigning a book to a ready-made classification item that matches the subject of the book, the Colon Classification (abbreviated CC) was invented (1933) by the Indian Shiyali Ramanrita Ranganathan (1892-1972) and uses a method of analyzing the title structure to construct classification symbols according to facets that can capture compound titles as well.
