One of the important ancient Roman roads that connected Rome with Aternum (now Pescara) on the Adriatic coast. It extended to Celfennia around 300 BC. It was named after Valerius Messala, who paved it in 154 BC. During the reign of Emperor Claudius I (41-54), it reached the Adriatic Sea and was called the Via Claudia-Valeria. Pliny the Elder states that the length of this road is 219 km, which is the width of Italy from east to west.
