A former town in Iishi District, eastern Shimane Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Mitoya River and is served by National Route 54. There are many small-scale farms, and the town produces rice, Wagyu beef, chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, tobacco leaves, and also raises silkworms. Artificial afforestation and the attraction of factories are underway. In November 2004, it merged with Daito Town, Kamo Town, and Kiji Town in Ohara District, Mitoya Town in Iishi District, and Yoshida Village to become Unnan City. Area: 109.50 km2. 島根県東部,飯石(いいし)郡の旧町。三刀屋(みとや)川の上流域を占め,国道54号線が通じる。零細農家が多く,米,和牛,クリ,シイタケ,葉タバコなどを産し,養蚕も行う。人工造林や工場誘致が進められている。2004年11月大原郡大東町,加茂町,木次町,飯石郡三刀屋町,吉田村と合併し市制,雲南市となる。109.50km2。3965人(2003)。
