Sasebo Bay

Japanese: 佐世保湾 - させぼわん

A bay located in the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture, between the Kita Matsuura Peninsula and the northern part of the Nishisonogi Peninsula. Most of it belongs to Sasebo City. It is separated from Omura Bay by Hario Island, and its outlet to the open sea is narrowed by Yorifunahana at the northern tip of the Nishisonogi Peninsula and Mukogozaki on the mainland. It forms a ria coast and became a naval fortress area in the mid-Meiji period, with a naval arsenal located in Sasebo Port. After World War II, the old arsenal was taken over by Sasebo Heavy Industries, and the old naval base was used as a base for the Self-Defense Forces and the US military. Sasebo Port is a trading port as well as a ferry port to the Goto Islands, Kujukushima, Hirado Island, and other places.

長崎県北部，北松浦半島と西彼杵半島北部との間にある湾。大部分が佐世保市に属する。針尾島によって大村湾と隔てられ，外海への出口は西彼杵半島北端の寄船鼻と本土側の向後崎でせばめられている。リアス海岸をなし，明治中期に海軍要塞地帯となり，佐世保港に海軍工廠が立地。第2次世界大戦後，旧工廠は佐世保重工業に引き継がれ，旧海軍基地は自衛隊とアメリカ軍の基地として利用された。佐世保港は貿易港であるとともに，五島列島や九十九島，平戸島などへのフェリーの発着港でもある。
