Born: November 11, 1882, Polizzi Generosa, Sicily
[Died] December 4, 1952. Fiesole. Italian novelist and critic. His graduation thesis from the University of Florence, Storia della critica romantica in Italia (1905), was published on Croce's recommendation, and he published critiques in magazines such as Leonardo and Nuova Antologia. Although he accepted the propositions of Croce's aesthetics, he disagreed with Croce on the method of determining the evaluation of works, and he broke with him. He criticized Fascism, and in 1931 he went to the United States, where he became a professor at the University of Chicago, and obtained citizenship in 1938. His major works include Goliath, the March of Fascism (37), La vita e il libro (3 volumes, 10-13), Rubé (21), and I vivi ei morti (23).
