An organization of Protestants in Northern Ireland that sought to maintain Protestant dominance and protect the British constitutional monarchy. Founded in 1795. Named after William of Orange. Protestants who felt threatened by the formation of the United Irishmen in 1791 and the passage of the Catholic Relief Act in 1793 formed the organization after armed conflict with Catholic organizations. It opposed all measures for Irish autonomy, including the United Irishmen movement, D. O'Connell's movement for Catholic emancipation and repeal of Union, Parnell's Land Wars, and Gladstone's Home Rule policy, and in 1913 it organized the Ulster Volunteer Force to show its determination to fight to the end against the Irish Home Rule Bill.
