...While spirit mediumship itself has a very long history, those who are usually called mediums are those who have had the ability since the modern spiritualist movement that arose in the mid-19th century in America. A meeting in which one encounters the phenomena caused by a medium is called a sitting or séance, but with very few exceptions, physical mediums only conduct their séances in the dark. For this reason, they are difficult to study scientifically, and while many have been exposed as fraudulent, there are many whose credibility is unclear.
