[Vegetable seedling raising]
Vegetables such as eggplants, melons, and leeks have been grown in the open since the Edo period. There are also records of the first greenhouse seedlings, in which paper screens were used to cover the seedbeds for early harvest. In the Meiji period, forced cultivation became popular and greenhouse seedlings became widespread.
