German philosopher and psychologist. Born in Hanover. Studied at the University of Munich. Founded the Institute of Phraseology in Munich in 1905 (moved to Kirchberg, a suburb of Zurich in 1919). Attempted to systematize graphology, personality, and phrasology in his own way, and elevated them to an academic level, but at the root of these studies is the metaphysics of life, which draws on the traditions of German Romanticism. According to him, the soul, nature, and life are in opposition to the mind, ego, and reason, and the mind, which engages in timeless, abstract understanding, is an obstacle to life, and on this point he is at odds with Jaspers and others who preached faith in reason. Centering on the life force of the soul, he believed that these movements are "expressed" through the body, and from this he carried out a detailed scientific classification and systematization of personality. Graphology is a concrete development of this idea. His major works include Problems of Graphology (1910), Cosmological Love (1922), The Mind as the Adversary of Life (1929), and The Fundamental Theory of Phraseology (1936).
