A hemp-like perennial plant found in the Himalayan foothills and Asia Minor, it grows to 2m in height. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 7-13 leaflets, arranged alternately. The leaflets are lanceolate and reach 10cm in length, with serrated edges. Dioecious. The inflorescences are borne in the leaf axils, with male flowers having 3-9 sepals and 8 to numerous stamens, while female flowers have 3-8 sepals, 3-5 styles, and sometimes 3-5 stamens. There are no petals. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule about 1cm long. A yellow dye can be obtained from the roots, stems, and leaves, and was once widely used as a silk dye.
