A hemp-like perennial plant found in the Himalayan foothills and Asia Minor, it grows to 2m in height. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 7-13 leaflets, arranged alternately. The leaflets are lanceolate and reach 10cm in length, with serrated edges. Dioecious. The inflorescences are borne in the leaf axils, with male flowers having 3-9 sepals and 8 to numerous stamens, while female flowers have 3-8 sepals, 3-5 styles, and sometimes 3-5 stamens. There are no petals. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule about 1cm long. A yellow dye can be obtained from the roots, stems, and leaves, and was once widely used as a silk dye.

ヒマラヤ山麓地方から小アジアに分布するアサに姿が似た多年草で，高さ2mになる。葉は7～13の小葉をもつ奇数羽状複葉で，互生する。小葉は長さ10cmに達する披針形で，鋸歯がある。雌雄異株。花序は葉腋（ようえき）に生じ，雄花では萼片3～9枚，おしべ8～多数，雌花では萼片3～8枚，花柱3～5本で，3～5本のおしべをもつことがある。花弁はない。果実は長さ約1cmの円筒状の蒴果（さくか）。根，茎，葉から黄色染料が得られ，かつては絹の染料として多く用いられた。
