A city in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany. It is located about 70 km south of Leipzig, on the Zwickau-Armolde River flowing from the Erzgebirge. From the mid-12th century, it developed as a direct imperial city, centering on the market. In 1323, it came under the control of the Wettin family, Margraves of Meissen. The city is where the radical religious reformer T. Müntzer preached from 1520 to 1521. In addition to St. Marien Church (founded 1465-1536, restored 1883-91), St. Catherine Church (14th century), Gewandhaus (1522-36), and town hall (15th century), there is also a museum (1956) commemorating the composer Schumann (1810-56), who was born here.
