…After the 1917 revolution, the name Samoyed came to be used in place of Samoyed in the Soviet Union. The old names of the Samoyed peoples, Samoed-yurak, Eniseiskii Samoed, Samoed-tavgiits, and Ostyako-Samoed, were changed to Nenets, Enets, Ganasan (all meaning "people"), and Serikup (meaning "people of the land"), respectively. The physiognomic characteristics of the Samoyed peoples are a mixture of Mongoloid and Caucasoid (Europoid) elements, and are of the so-called Ural type. …
