...From Keage, it heads west, flows south along the east bank of the Kamo River, and reaches Fushimi, while a branch line runs north from Keage along the foot of Higashiyama Mountain, flows west through Shimogamo, and reaches Horikawa. The former is also called the Kamo River Canal, and the whole is usually called the Lake Biwa Canal. Plans to connect Lake Biwa with Kyoto by a waterway for maritime transport had existed many times from the early modern period to the early Meiji period, but it was not realized until the mid-Meiji period. ...
