…German chemist. Born in Riga, Latvia. His father was a cooper. He graduated from Dorpat University with a degree in chemistry, and served as professor of chemistry at the Riga Technical University and professor of physical chemistry at the University of Leipzig. He played a major role in the development of physical chemistry from the 1870s to the early 20th century, and received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1909. Ostwald's first research was related to J. Thomsen's research on the affinity of acids, and he studied the chemical equilibrium between various acids and bases based on measurements of the density and refractive index of the solutions. …
