A Macedonian dynasty that ruled Egypt from 305 to 30 BC. Its founder was Ptolemy I. Its capital was Alexandria. It expanded into Asia Minor and Syria in the second half of the 3rd century BC, and annexed Cyrene during the reign of Ptolemy III Euergetes (reigned 246-221 BC), reaching its greatest extent. By this time, the bureaucratic and tax systems had been established, important industries had been monopolized, and Hellenistic culture had blossomed, centering around famous libraries and academic research institutes (Mouseion). After that, the dynasty's success declined due to internal conflicts within the dynasty and the kingdom, and it was destroyed by Octavian (later Augustus) under Cleopatra in 30 BC. → Related topics Egypt (region) | Hellenism Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
