The word özbek first appears in historical documents as an ethnic name in the late 14th century. Initially, it was a name referring to all the nomads living on the grasslands of the Kipchak Khanate, but in the mid-15th century, when Abu al-Khayr Khan, a descendant of Shiban, the fifth son of Jochi Khan, emerged and established a powerful nomadic state on the Kipchak steppe, the Siban family and their subordinates came to be called Uzbeks in particular.
