...A comprehensive chemical company with three core divisions: chemicals, cement, and machinery. The head office is in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The company was founded in 1897 when Watanabe Sukesaku established the anonymous association Okinoyama Coal Mine to develop the Ube coalfields (reorganized as a joint-stock company in 1928). Later, the anonymous association Ube Shinkawa Iron Works (established in 1914, reorganized as Ube Iron Works Co., Ltd. in 1917) was established to manufacture and repair coal mining equipment, Ube Cement Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (1923) used the coal and clay from the mine and limestone mined nearby, and Ube Nitrogen Industries Co., Ltd. (1933) was established to manufacture ammonium sulfate by completely gasifying Ube coal.
