Mostly small - Daihansho

Japanese: 大半小 - だいはんしょう

A unit of area used mainly from the end of ancient Japan through the Middle Ages. It was first seen in historical documents in the Otori Shrine Ryukicho of Izumi (Osaka Prefecture) in 922 (Engi 22). "Large" means two-thirds of a tan, "half" means one-half, and "small" means one-third of the area, and as one tan at the time was 360 bu, they were 240 bu, 180 bu, and 120 bu, respectively. It is a convenient unit of area when one tan of rice paddy is divided into six equal parts by ridges, and is found throughout the country, but is particularly common in the Kinai region, western Chugoku, northern Shikoku, and the Tokai and Kanto regions.

主として日本古代末期から中世を通じて用いられた面積単位。史料上の初見は922年(延喜22)の和泉(大阪府)の《大鳥神社流記帳》。大は1段の3分の2，半は2分の1，小は3分の1の面積を表し，当時の1段は360歩であったから，それぞれ240歩，180歩，120歩であった。1段の水田が畦畔によって6等分されているような場合に便利な面積単位で，全国的に分布するが，とくに畿内と中国西部，四国北部，東海関東地方に多い。
