Hawksbill turtle (Hawksbill) - Hawksbill (English spelling)
A marine turtle of the family Chelonidae (illustration), whose shell is used as tortoiseshell for crafts. It can reach a carapace length of 70-90cm and a weight of 120kg. It lives in the warm waters of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and sometimes comes ashore to lay eggs in some of the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. It lays about 160 eggs at a time. The scales on its carapace overlap like a tile, but as it grows it becomes smooth and arranged like paving stones. The front end of the upper jaw is curved like a hook, and it is used to catch fish, crustaceans, mollusks, etc., but it also eats algae.
