Abridged Record of Fuso - Fusoryakki

Abridged Record of Fuso - Fusoryakki

A chronological history book written in Chinese from Emperor Jinmu to Emperor Horikawa. It was written in the late Heian period by Ajari Kouen (?-1169). It places emphasis on Buddhism. It ends in 1094 (Kaho 1) during the reign of Emperor Horikawa, so it was certainly written after that. According to the Honcho Shojaku Mokuroku, which is thought to have been written in the late 13th century, it had 30 volumes, but it has now been lost and only 16 volumes remain, as well as excerpts from the reigns of Emperor Jinmu to Emperor Heizei. It was compiled with reference to the Rikkokushi and other ancient temple-related traditions, and some of the sources are clearly stated. There are some interesting articles unrelated to Buddhism, such as citing the Sumitomo Tsuihoki, but it is generally filled with articles related to Buddhism. Some of them are unreliable, but there are also valuable historical documents that are cited and have been lost today. However, there is no doubt that many of them should be criticized. The author, Koen, was a Tendai Buddhist scholar who lived at Kudokuin Temple in Enryaku-ji Temple, and one of his disciples was the famous Honen (Genku). It is included in the Kokushi Taikei.
