Aktaion (English spelling) Aktaiōn

Aktaion (English spelling) Aktaiōn

A hunter who appears in Greek mythology. He was the son of Aristaeus, the son of Apollo, and Autonoe, the daughter of Cadmus. He was raised by Chiron, a member of the monster Centaur clan, and learned the art of hunting from him. One day, Actaeon was torn to pieces by 50 pet dogs while hunting in the mountains of Cithaeron. It is said that he died because he tried to steal Zeus' lover Semele, but many theories say that he was angry when he witnessed the naked body of the virgin goddess Artemis while bathing. The virgin goddess Artemis turned Actaeon into a deer by pouring water from a spring, and incited his hunting dogs to bite him. To comfort the dogs who had lost their master, Chiron created a statue of Actaeon.
